Did you know that you can apply for a higher grade based purely on your previous private sector construction projects? A number of applicants think that only government projects apply but this is not the only case.
The following CIDB documents are required for registration.

Companies incorporated as close corporation are not required to submit a share certificate, however, public & privately incorporated companies, whose title end with (PTY) or (Inc), are required to submit a certified shareholder’s certificate date stamped within 3 months. If you don’t have a shareholder’s certificate, we shall assist you in this regard.
The electrical contractor’s certificate is required when applying for the electrical class of works (E.B only). It applies to all grades from Grade 1 to 9. It can be got from the department of labor. WHO MUST REGISTER WITH THE CIDB
Anyone who wants to bid for a government tender must register with the board. Depending on the value as well as the type of government construction project, companies can register for the various grades as well as class dependent on their financial & works capability scores.
All companies wishing to register for the board, must be registered at the government’s central supplier’s database & have a valid CSD registration summary report that is compliant in all aspects. - How much is a CIDB certificate?
- Cidb registration fees range from R 450 to R 55,750 depending on the grade applied for. They include the application& annual fee payable upon registration.
R 450 (Grade 1), R 700 (Grade 2), R 1,100 (Grade 3), R 1,650 (Grade 4), R 2,500 (Grade 5), R 4,250 (Grade 6) R 9,750 (Grade 7), R 29, 750 (Grade 8) R 55, 750 (Grade 9). Prices include registration & annual fee.
Financial Statements are required for applications of grade 3 & higher. They are required by the CIDB to determine your financial capability. For more on this, see below. They must be drafted by a registered auditor in good standing with the IRBA or SAICA. We are registered accountants in good standing with both bodies & can assist you with the financial statements required by the CIDB. Financial statements are used by the board to determine your works & financial capability as explained below.
Financial Capability refers to the overall annual earnings of the company within the past 5 years. The board will take the best revenue or turnover from the one set of financial statements submitted to determine your financial capability. This is applicable to construction companies wishing to apply for grades 3 & higher.
Works Capability (Table C)
Works capability refers to the single largest construction project carried out within the past 5 years. For applications of grade 2 & higher, the board will look at the value range of your historical construction projects carried out in order to determine the grading. For example, for grade 1, works capability is none however, for grade 2, the required works capability must be a construction project with a value of not less than R 130,000.

What is a Cidb certificate?
A CIDB certificate is a certificate issued by the Construction & Industry Development Board to certify a construction company’s capacity to carry out a government tender. The certificate determines the tender value range & the type of construction works (Class) that the company can bid for in a government tender. For example, construction companies with a CIDB class 1 electrical engineering works can only bid for government electrical contract works between the values of R 1 & R 130,000.
SPONSORSHIP & JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENTS

How long does it take to get a cidb certificate?
Between 3 to 21 working days dependent on the grade applied for. For grade 1, it will take about 2 to 3 days whereas for the remainder of the other grades, it will take 21 days. Applicants must make provision for issues such as the head office being off line as well as load shedding.
